The statistical properties of the volatility of price fluctuations

چکیده
We study the statistical properties of volatility—a measure of how much the market is likely to fluctuate. We estimate the volatility by the local average of the absolute price changes. We analyze (a) the S&P 500 stock index for the 13-year period Jan 1984 to Dec 1996 and (b) the market capitalizations of the largest 500 companies registered in the Trades and Quotes data base, documenting all trades for all the securities listed in the three major stock exchanges in the US for the 2-year period Jan 1994 to Dec 1995. For the S&P 500 index, the probability density function of the volatility can be fit with a log-normal form in the center. However, the asymptotic behavior is better described by a power-law distribution characterized by an exponent 1 + μ ≈ 4. For individual companies, we find a similar power law asymptotic behavior of the probability distribution of volatility with exponent 1 + μ ≈ 4. In addition, we find that the volatility distribution scales for a range of time intervals. Further, we study the correlation function of the volatility and find power law decay with long persistence for the S&P 500 index and the individual companies with a crossover at approximately 1.5 days. Forecasting Crude Oil prices Volatility and Value at Risk: Single and Switching Regime GARCH Models
Forecasting crude oil price volatility is an important issues in risk management. The historical course of oil price volatility indicates the existence of a cluster pattern. Therefore, GARCH models are used to model and more accurately predict oil price fluctuations. The purpose of this study is to identify the best GARCH model with the best performance in different time horizons. To achieve th...

This paper uses monthly price indices of 448 items of manufacturing sector in 2004:4 to 2016:01, to study the effect of exchange rate and its volatilities on price setting behavior of manufacturing sectors. Given that, many manufacturing sectors in Iran need to import raw materials, intermediate and capital goods in their production process, it is expected that exchange rate variations affect p...

متن کاملA Copula-based Quantile Model for Crude oil Return-Volatility Dependence Modelling: Case of Iran Heavy Oil
The main purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between Iran’s heavy crude oil price returns and volatility dependence using the Copula-based quantile model (CQM). CQM is an efficient tool for analyzing nonlinear time series models as it has no need for initial assumptions. We use monthly data from January 1990 to December 2019. We use the Hadrick-Prescott filter to calculate...

There are various ways for estimating velocity of money in economic literature and each has its own specific weaknesses and strengths. Particularly, since a great deal of financial innovations and changes have recently taken place affecting the velocity of money, many traditional methods can no langer calculate the equilibrium velocity of money, and they are no longer dependable from the econom...
متن کاملStatistical properties of the volatility of price fluctuations.
We study the statistical properties of volatility, measured by locally averaging over a time window T, the absolute value of price changes over a short time interval deltat. We analyze the S&P 500 stock index for the 13-year period Jan. 1984 to Dec. 1996. We find that the cumulative distribution of the volatility is consistent with a power-law asymptotic behavior, characterized by an exponent m...
